Yes! Its that time of year for you and your family to relax, play and exercise in your own backyard swimming pool. The pool water's inviting and warm here in Southwest Florida. It's just what you've been looking forward to.
We also know that you want your pool water to be blue and clear. And, you'll also want peace-of-mind in knowing that your water is sanitized and balanced to assure healthy and comfortable swimming.
You know that chlorine has been added as your "first line of defense" against recreational waterborne illnesses (also known by the acronym RWI's) to help keep your swimming pool water clean and clear. And yet the frequency of waterborne illnesses continue to increase Nationally, and in particular here in warm and sunny Southwest Florida due to "chlorine-resistant" bacteria and parasites entering the water.
An excellent source for additional information about RWI's and the increasing threat to the swimming public can be found on the
"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" web site: www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming/what.htm
So, just how effective is chlorine when used alone in assuring swimmers have safe pool water?
Frankly, the efficacy of chlorine used alone and intended to protect us from the multitude of bacteria and parasites introduced by airborne debris, rain, birds and the swimmers themselves, may not be good enough.
You see, in spite of the best care and even the use of the recommended levels of chlorine, our pool water may not always be completely sanitized.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta states that,
Whether chlorine is added directly to the pool as a liquid, 3" tablets in an erosion feeder or by a salt chlorine generator, it will kill most pathogens in the pool water eventually. However, it can take up to an hour or more to kill the E-coli, Pseudomonas, and Shigella pathogens.
Other pathogens such as the dreaded and chlorine-resistant Giardia and the
Cryptosporidium protozoan can survive for up to ten days in a properly chlorinated pool and continue to threaten the health of swimmers, particularly the young and the elderly.
To provide for your peace-of-mind and to be assured your pool water is fully protected from these difficult to "detect and destroy" pathogens, we recommend that you install a "second line of defense", a Delta Ultraviolet disinfection system for your pool.
A recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal attempts to explain the escalating crisis in America's swimming pools and how industry representatives are recommending "Ultraviolet-Light water treatment as a solution.
Additionally, an article by Michele Hlavsa, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta (CDC) also recommends that, "To prevent outbreaks, we encourage pool operators to add supplemental disinfection to conventional chlorination and filtration methods."
The installation of a Delta Ultraviolet Sanitizer will remove contaminants from the water that chlorine alone can not.
Ultraviolet disinfection and its proven germicidal effectiveness has been an established science dating back over 100 years. The technology was discovered back in 1877 and used to purify municipal drinking water in Marseilles, France soon after. Today the
technology is used widely in the treatment of drinking water in countless cities around the world.
Ultraviolet technology is also utilized widely in the pharmaceutical and the bottled water industries as well as waste water reclamation. In addition to water purification, the technology is used in providing safe and germ-free air for commercial buildings and hospitals. Recent adaptation of ultraviolet air purification can be found for purifying the air in your home heating and cooling systems.
The use of ultraviolet sanitizing for swimming pool and spa water is not new. The technology has been successfully used in many of the European countries for years, and is finding wide acceptance in our country as the solution to the eradication of recreational water bourne illnesses.
As your pool water circulates through your filtration system it passes through the Delta Ultraviolet Sanitizer where the bacteria, viruses, mold and algae are exposed to the potent germicidal radiation, leaving the cleanest and purest water possible to return back into your swimming pool. You'll have peace of mind knowing that a Delta Ultraviolet Sanitizer is protecting your family and friends.
